Actually we purchased 3 different machines but let’s focus on the cs6000i first because it’s our #1 pick.
Important Note: All the sew machines featured here are priced under 200 dollars at the time of writing (indeed, we didn’t spend over 200 on each model). The prices may very well change without notice, so please do take a look at each machine’s product details page for the most-up-to-date pricing.

Our #1 Choice of the Best Sewing Machines under $200
When we bought this machine a year ago, it received the #1 best-selling selling tag on Amazon. Fast forward one year later—at the time of this review—the cs6000i still remains the #1 selling sewing machine. That’s quite remarkable.
The Brother cs6000i has been getting an overwhelming amount of praises from beginners, intermediate seamstresses, heck even more experienced seamstresses and tailors too.
When it comes to price vs. performance ratio, the cs6000i has to be absolutely the best sewing machine available for under $200.
We compared this sewing machine to other models within this price range, and it became evident to us that this is the best value unit for its price.
Simply put, if you’re searching for a sewing machine that’s very reasonably priced, yet is equipped with loads of features that can rival some of those top-of-the-line models, then don’t hesitate to check out the cs6000i.
What features does this Brother cs6000i bring to the table?
Automatic Needle Threader
This is a time-saving feature and it simplifies the task of threading the needle on your sewing machine.
Automatic Button Holer
It’s a very nifty feature that enables the machine to perform all the work. You just set the button hole that you wish to use right on the LCD screen.
It then informs you which presser foot to put on. Let the machine do its thing and soon enough, you’ll get button holes that are flawlessly done and done pretty fast to boot.
LCD Screen for Stitch Selection
The Brother cs6000i offers a total of sixty different stitches which include a variety of quilting, utility, heirloom and decorative stitch functions, in addition to an extra wide 7mm Zigzag stitch.
Start/Stop Button
With this feature, you can forget about using the foot pedal and just sew away. Of course the foot pedal is available in case you prefer to use one.
Sewing Speed Controller
It gives you the ability to choose your sewing speed, so you can opt to go fast or go slow—the choice is yours. It’s a very helpful feature to have especially during situations when it’s best to go at a much slower pace.
Twitchy foot on the machine’s foot pedal has been troubling us a number of times over the years. Now where did we put that upicker, eh?
Free-arm
Sewing tubes can be done with ease thanks to this feature. Most of the sewing bed can be removed (it’s the flat surface that the material sits on when you’re sewing), leaving a smaller area to sew on that doesn’t go all the way down to the table surface.
The benefit here is that it makes it easy for you to sew tube type shapes such as the legs of a pair of pants, or the hem on sleeves. If there’s no free-arm, of course you wouldn’t want to do those things!
Other features are:
Clear Bobbin Cover
Six Point Feed Dogs
1-touch start/stop and reverse functions
Maximum sewing speed 850 stitches per minute
Variable needle position
Second spool pin for twin needle sewing
Built in manual thread cutter on the left side of the sewing machine
Vertical thread delivery
Presser foot lever control with 3 height settings
As mentioned earlier, the Brother cs6000i is a computerized sewing machine, and features 60 stitch functions. In addition, it has 7 styles of 1-step buttonholes plus a total of 9 Snap-on presser feet.
Presser feet are the metal (or plastic) feet that hold the fabric flat down against the feed dogs, which move the fabric forward while it is being sewn.
Snap-on presser feet literally snap on as opposed to having to be screwed on like those found on old sewing machines. Obviously it’s so much more convenient and faster to switch the feet on your sewing machine using the former.
In order to switch the presser foot, all you have to do is push a button which is situated on the back of the presser foot and the foot is released immediately.
Next, you grab the presser foot that you want to use and put the thing below the holder. You then lower the lever, and just like that the new presser foot snaps into place. It’s extremely hassle-free.
The Brother cs6000i utilizes low shank presser feet, and that’s good because it allows you to use the generic kind of low shank presser feet, which can help you perform a wide range of sewing jobs on your sewing machine.
The cs6000i ships with these 9 presser feet:
Zigzag – Also called a General Purpose presser foot. This is a standard component and all sewing machines should have one in the box.
Overcasting – For making seams that look they were made by a pro seamstress with protection against fraying edges.
Button Fitting Foot – Rather than sewing buttons manually by hand, this handy little foot lets you sew them onto garments via the sewing machine and the button fitting foot.
Walking Foot – This presser foot has feed dogs that provide superior fabric control, which helps a lot especially when doing quilting or working with material that has some rather thick layers.
Quilting Foot – If you plan on doing darning, free motion embroidery, or free motion quilting, then use this quilting foot which is spring activated.
Buttonhole Foot – This foot allows you to create buttonholes automatically. In the back of the buttonhole foot is where normal sized buttons are placed.
The machine will then make use of the button which acts as a guide to help conceive a buttonhole that’s flawlessly sized.
As mentioned previously, the cs6000i sewing machine is capable of creating 7 different styles of buttonholes, so you pick the one you like, and the machine creates one automatically and the size will be flawless. It’s an extremely handy feature, don’t you think?
Zipper Foot
Monogramming Foot
Blind Stitch Foot
As already mentioned it has an easy to use, computerized stitch selection on the LCD screen.
You’ll find an illustrated stitch guide on the side of the machine (as in the image below) to help you to choose the appropriate stitch for your job.

It also sports auto threading, a tension control dial, and an auto-set drop-in bobbin.
One Step, Quick set drop-in Bobbin
There are two threads required to be used on a sewing machine. The top thread that comes from the reel and the bottom thread that comes from the bobbin.
The drop-in bobbin feature is the most user-friendly, easy to use bobbin set up you can get. It works in a very simple way and it saves you time as well as frustration because you don’t have to muck around trying to remove the bobbin carrier from the machine.
When you don’t have to do that, it means that you also don’t have to remember which way the bobbin goes and then attempt to put the bobbin and carrier back.
If you’ve ever used a machine with a traditional bobbin set up, you obviously will be familiar with the process of having to turn the drive wheel by hand in a slow manner in order to try and pick up the bobbin thread.
Thanks to the drop-in bobbin feature, you no longer have to perform this tedious task. The process is one-step. All you really have to do is keep hold of the end of the thread, then just drop the bobbin in.
There’s even a printed guide on the machine to remind you how to insert the bobbin. How thoughtful, right?
It’s simple and even if you’re a total newbie to sewing and sewing machines in general, the chances of you experiencing a hard time following the instructions to load the bobbin on the cs6000i are slim to none.
It’s a time-saving feature and it prevents frustration so we absolutely love it!
Here, take a look at this video which explains the basic feature of the Brother cs6000i sewing machine.

Here, take a look at this video which explains the basic feature of the Brother cs6000i sewing machine.
The cs6000i has helped us complete plenty of projects and for us, this sewing machine truly over delivers for its price. Its performance, features, and overall quality are on par with a lot of machines out there that are significantly costlier.
The Brother cs6000i can be operated with either a foot pedal or a 1-touch button for start, stop, and reverse stitching. Plus, it comes with a couple more helpful features in the form of dual LED light for illuminating your sewing area, and built-in handle for easy portability.
What accessories come with the Brother cs6000i?
It comes with a clip-on wide table accessory which creates a nice big flat surface for tackling larger jobs such as quilting. A hard cover case is also included to protect your sewing machine while in storage
Note: This is not a carrying case though. It’s more of a dust/protection cover. You won’t find a handle on it or even a base. Essentially, its purpose is to protect your machine when not in use.
If you need a top-notch carrying case, you might want to get the Brother 5300 Universal Sewing Machine Carrying Case shown below. It’s not that expensive.

What is the size and weight?
This machine’s dimensions are 16 x 6.7 x 11.4 inches and the weight is laughable. The machine is ridiculously light and combined with its built-in handle; the portability receives an A+ in our book.
Does it come with a warranty?
At the time of writing, the Brother cs6000i sewing machine comes with a limited 25-year warranty along with free phone support for the life of the product.
Any complaints?
From us, just one and that would be the weight of the machine which is way too light! Sure, it’s super easy to carry it around, but it’s just as easy to knock it over too—seriously! Perhaps having a little bit more weight to it would’ve been nice.
Another thing we’d like to point out regarding its lightweight built, there is a possibility that when you’re sewing a big and fairly hefty item, like a quilt, the machine may shift or slide around the table a little bit.
We solved this problem by putting our sewing machine on a rubber mat. This solution works perfectly for us, so you might want to try it out in case you experience that sliding issue.
When it comes to reviews from other users, the vast majority of them are positive. As the case with most products that are best-selling and have obtained a large amount of reviews, the Brother cs6000i machine has received its share of negative reviews as well—though the number is relatively small.
Many of those negative ones revolve around certain functions not working as expected or faulty components. So far we haven’t encountered any issues with our machine and judging by the overwhelmingly positive reviews, most users are in the same happy boat as us.
We even came across a negative review by one person who ordered the machine to use in Australia, unfortunately not realizing that the difference in power supply would render the sewing machine unusable!

Conclusion
As we said at the beginning of this review, the cs6000i is the best sewing machine under $200. It genuinely represents the best value for under that amount of money.
It is a sewing and embroidery machine that offers a host of very helpful features and is most recommended for beginner to intermediate sewing enthusiasts.

Choice #2: Model 4423 - Best SINGER Sewing Machine Under $200
SINGER is an unknown brand when it comes to sewing machines, so naturally, we were quite apprehensive when we first came to know about this model.
We’re kidding! Of course when it comes to churning out mostly first-rate sewing machines, SINGER is pretty much famous all over the world! Not all their models are A+ quality though, but the 4423 belongs in that category.
Because this model is so easy to use and works great, newbie and pro seamstresses alike are highly pleased with it (based on the numerous positive reviews we’ve read so far, and yes we are pleased with it too).
Various useful features are offered by this powerful machine including automatic buttonhole, an adjustable tension, easy drop-in bobbin system, and needle threader.
This SINGER sewing machine utilizes a metal frame that’s very sturdy for its interior; while the bedplate is constructed of stainless steel. Clearly this machine is sticking to its identity as a piece of heavy-duty sewing equipment.
The stainless steel bed-plate is just great because it actually pushes the fabric smoothly through thus enabling you to achieve a more even sewing.
Since the unit is so sturdy, you don’t have to worry about it being all wobbly and shaky while you’re going about your sewing projects.
Its motor is simply outstanding and is said to be 60% more powerful that the run-of-the-mill home sewing machines.
The motor is the reason why the SINGER 4423 is able to help users get their projects done quickly. We’re talking about sewing speed of up to 1,100 stitches per minute here. That’s pretty incredible.
The machine certainly is a powerful workhorse capable of handling a great variety of sewing projects, and it often does so at half the time of other sewing machines.
We are also happy with the SINGER 4423’s ability to handle heavy fabric material, which sadly, many other sewing machine models in its class are unable to handle very well.
You have the ability to change the position of the needle in order to facilitate specific projects including cording, topstitching, and inserting zippers.
You can then adjust the tension so that the stitch quality is well stabilized irrespective of the type of fabric you’re working with.
There are 23 built-in stitches for you to play around with, along with a fully automatic one-step buttonhole which is ever so handy.
We like the drop feed feature as well which presents a more creative approach to doing topstitching. It’s especially useful for sewing quilts, monogramming, and for putting in your own creative touches.
A variety of accessories are included too such as an all-purpose foot, a button sewing foot, a pack of needles, spool pin and felt, among others.

Choice #3: Model 7258 - The Best SINGER Sewing Machine for Beginners
We checked out about a dozen or so reviews before trying out this model and according to many users, the 7258 Stylist is the best SINGER sewing machine for beginners.
Now, that’s a claim which made us feel a teeny bit skeptical at first.
Well, now that we own the machine and have actually completed a bunch of projects with it—we are more than happy to concur that this machine is indeed beginner-friendly.

The 7258 Stylist Loves Sewing Newbies!
It’s a great unit for folks who are new to sewing because for one thing, it comes with a well written user manual together with video instructions on DVD. That’s a nice touch.
Reading manuals is a necessity, though admittedly, it’s just about as exciting as reading about the history of sewing needle, so we much prefer videos.
So, the included videos are excellently presented and it’ll help beginners learn the proper way to use sewing machines. There are some little-known nuggets that will help you make the most out of your sewing machine.
And then there’s the sewing machine itself which is very easy to work with. The unit runs great and so far, we’ve yet to experience jamming of any kind. It’s been a smooth ride thus far.
It has many useful auto-adjusting features like the tension for instance which the machine is capable of adjusting automatically, but still allows manual tweaking as well.

Fun and Convenient Features
Stitches, stitches, and more stitches! See, we wouldn’t call it the best sewing machine under 200 dollars, if it doesn’t come with a bunch of stitches.
Thank goodness the 7258 Stylist supplies a BIG bunch of stitches. There are almost a hundred of built-in stitches and most of them look fine.
Plenty of variety including stretch stitches, numerous interesting decorative stitches, auto buttonholes, etc. Trust me; you’ll love the sheer variety of stitches available in this machine.
Another top feature is the ability to stop the machine with the needle up or down. In most projects, you stop with the needle position staying up, but in some you want it down.
So this machine allows you to stop up or down and it can be done automatically. That’s pretty neat, right?

Happy Feet!
One more neat thing is the amazing number of presser feet included in the box. You’ll find 10 of them in total and you can play around to create all sorts of possibilities. We’ve only tried 5 of them so far and they are all good. Just be sure to watch the video instructions on how to install them.
I actually skipped the videos initially, which was a mistake because afterward I couldn’t figure out how to change the presser feet!
The 7258 Stylist may be the best SINGER sewing machine for beginners, but if you don’t bother with the nuts and bolts, who knows, you might end up ruining the unit.
Speaking of which, the machine is pretty durable. We’ve only had it for maybe 3 months or so, therefore it’s still very early to tell. However, at this point it seems to be holding up extremely well. Plus, we did mention earlier that the unit still hasn’t jammed on us yet—fingers crossed!
This sewing machine with adjustable speed is definitely well worth the money folks. The auto needle threader is heaven-sent, and the unit provides features that are actually useful to have.
It’s quite durable, and runs quietly which is a massive plus to us. We really hate noisy sewing machines!
Nothing to complain about so far except that due to time constraints, we have yet to mess around with all the available stitches. We’ve been itching to try out all those stitches.
