MAKING THE PATTERN—CUTTING OUT
From denim cut 2 pieces, each 65 x 80cm. Also cut 2 straps, 7 x 20cm. Cut 10cm off the long edge of the piece of lining fabric to make a piece 80cm wide.
Enlarge the pattern as indicated on the graph below. The clothes on the line, the girl’s clothes and the washing in the basket can be sketched in roughly, as they are not cutting patterns.

Using the graph pattern a guide, draw separate patterns for the clothes, adding 1cm to all edges for turning under. (The clothes need have only one side; though you can, of course, make real miniature clothes if you prefer.)
Cut all appliqué pieces and clothes from' appropriate fabrics, cutting the cloud (in one piece) twice from white cotton. Cut the cloud pattern once from wadding; trim the edges slightly.

TO MAKE THE BAG
Press under 1cm on one short edge of each denim piece and topstitch hem in place.
Using fusible webbing, following the manufacturer’s instructions, bond all the shaded appliqué pieces, except the basket, to one piece of denim in the correct positions.
Slip a bit of lace edging under the edge of the girl’s skirt before bonding. Do not bond upper ends of poles. Set the machine to a close zigzag stitch and stitch round all the bonded appliqué pieces. Leave a gap unstitched above and below pole crossbars.
Work zigzag stitch over the basket to form a pattern, then stitch it to the background along the side and bottom edges. Tack the wadding and cotton cloud pieces together, with wadding in the middle.
Tack clouds to denim in the position shown, then zigzag stitch close to the edges all round. Trim away any excess fabric, being careful not to cut the stitches.
Make up the separate clothes as shown in the photograph, adding trimmings and fastenings as appropriate.
Cut the beige ribbon and the touch-and-close fastening into 8 pieces, each 2cm long. Oversew the two sides of each piece of fastening at one short end to form a ‘hinge’. Place the fuzzy side of the fastening under the shoulder of a garment and place a strip of ribbon on top. Backstitch through all three layers as shown in the photograph.
Wrap each end of the piping cord around the poles as shown and stitch it firmly in place.
Cut heavyweight interfacing the same size as bag pieces. Tack the interfacing round the raw edges and slipstitch it to the hem across the top. Place the two bag pieces together, RS facing, and stitch them together, taking 1cm seam allowance. Trim the interfacing close to the stitching and turn the bag RS out.
Turn under and press 1cm on long edges of straps. Fold straps in half lengthwise, WS facing, and topstitch along both edges. Tack them to the WS of bag as shown in the photograph, about 5cm in from each side.
Fold the lining piece in half widthwise, RS facing, and stitch along both long sides, taking 1cm seam allowance. Turn 1cm to the WS along the upper edge; press. Slip the lining into the bag and slipstitch bag and lining together firmly along the upper edge.
Fold scraps of fabric and slip them into laundry basket to suggest washing.
